South Africa Postpones Re-Opening Of Schools

South Africa has delayed reopening schools after their education authorities cited lack of preparedness in some parts of the country. Grade 12 and 7 students were preparing to go back to school after their schools were closed in March due to the pandemic that has brought the world on its knees.

Addressing the press today the country’s Education Minister Angelina Motshekga said;

It became clear that the sector was at different levels of readiness. There were key factors around safety for the coronavirus which have not been satisfied, like water. Some principals were not advised on time, some learners were on their way to school when they discovered that school is still closed.

Meanwhile, teachers’ unions had protested the South African Government’s decision to re-open schools as they said the threat of spreading and contracting the virus was still high. The country has recorded over 32 000 cases and over 600 deaths so far.
