Progress In Fighting COVID-19 Will Determine Dates For School Resumption - Minister

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cain Mathema has said the dates for resumption of schools in Zimbabwe will be determined by the country’s progress in fighting the coronavirus.

This comes amid calls by teachers’ unions for government to postpone the reopening of schools as the country is not prepared to fight the pandemic.

Speaking during the launch of the Manicaland province Covid-19 Schools Response Plan in Mutare this Wednesday, Mathema said:

There has been some understandable anxiety on the part of parents and children as to when schools will open again. The opening date will be determined by the progress that we make as a nation in fighting the coronavirus. The process is also involving engagements with stakeholders so that the best decision can be taken in the interests of learners, teachers, other workers in the schools and communities. Following initial consultations, the ministry has come up with 5 phases reopening plan that begins with the examination of classes in 2020.

President Mnangagwa has already allowed final year students in tertiary institutions to resume studies albeit under strict conditions to prevent the spread and transmission of the novel coronavirus.
