Mudenda Warns MDCA MPs Over Parly Boycott

Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda has warned MDC Alliance (MDCA) legislators who are boycotting Parliament saying the Standing Rules and Orders will soon be invoked.

Mudenda issued the warning on Tuesday after only four MPs from the MDCA attended the Parliamentary sitting, with the rest staying away. He said:

The missing MPs must be reminded that they took the oath of office and promised to represent their constituencies.

They must respect the country’s laws. It is not the responsibility of the chair to persuade them to come to Parliament.

Parliament has Standing Rules and Orders which can be invoked. It is not the responsibility of the Speaker to ask the party to appoint its Chief Whip.

Parliament process will continue nonetheless.

The warning followed a request by outspoken Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa (Independent) that Mudenda speedily resolves the boycott stance taken by MDC Alliance MPs, saying ruling ZANU PF legislators are too weak to take on cabinet ministers during Parliament’s question and answer sessions.
