Zimbabwe Police Press Charges On 'Abducted' MDC Members

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has pressed criminal charges on Joannah Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, all MDC Alliance officials, for gathering with the intent to promote public violence and breach of peace.

The trio was arrested at a flash protest in Warren Park on 13 May, abducted from police custody and were maltreated over 24 hours by 5 alleged state agents.

The police say the trio, by participating and or organising the hunger protest, violated Section 37 of the Criminal Code and Statutory Instrument 99 of 2020 which bars all public gatherings during the fight against COVID 19.

The three women are currently admitted at a hospital in Harare where they are receiving treatment for injuries sustained from torture by their kidnappers.

Meanwhile, police have said investigations are underway to establish what really transpired on the day of the arrest until the trio was found dumped in Bindura.

While some government officials have insinuated that the alleged abduction was staged, the trio and the MDC are of the conviction that the state is behind the abuses since the women were taken from police custody.

Mamombe’s Mercedes Benz which she was reportedly driving on the day of the arrest was found parked at Harare Central Police station where they were allegedly taken from Warren Park.
