7 Gweru Cops In Court For Accepting Bribes From Shop Owners Violating Lockdown Restrictions

7 Police Officers appeared before Gweru magistrate after they accepted bribes from shop owners who were violating lockdown restrictions by operating without authority, New Zimbabwe reports.

The officers all stationed at Gweru Rural Police Station were arrested on Monday following a tip-off. They reportedly raided a shop owner and confiscated 16 cases of Chibuku beer and 4 cases of cane spirits before the shop owner gave them $1000  to return the confiscated wares.

In another incident, the officers approached another shop owner and demanded $200 and 20 litres of fuel from him and or they would confiscate 200 litres of fuel he kept at the premises.

In another incident, the officers approached a shop owner who also operates a bar at the same premises and demanded a bribe which the shop owner paid to evade arrest.

The 7 are out on $3000 bail each.
