Komichi Apologises For Supporting Chamisa's 2018 'Putsch'

MDC-T national chairperson Morgen Komichi has apologised to party structures for helping MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa grab power following the death of founding president Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018.

Speaking during an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, Komichi pleaded for forgiveness for abetting the violation of the party’s constitution. He said:

I want to take responsibility that I was part and parcel of the leadership then and I was the national chairperson then.

Probably I could have done better to serve you (MDC members). Probably I could have done better to make you feel comfortable, on that point I want to apologise, I am sorry, please forgive me.

The MDC-T national council elected Chamisa, who was one of the three deputies, to take over the presidency soon after news of Tsvangirai’s demise filtered through.

Khupe, who was the only vice president elected at the party’s 2014 congress, left with a few officials who contested the 2018 general election as the MDC-T party.

Komichi was Chamisa’s chief election agent in the 2018 presidential election and was arrested, convicted and fined $200 for contravening the Electoral Act after he publicly disputed elections results that were announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Following the recent Supreme Court ruling, Komichi abandoned Chamisa and joined Khupe’s camp and has since reinstated himself as the MDC-T national chairperson.
