Zimbabwe Health Officials Worried Over Surge In COVID-19 Cases

Health authorities are concerned over the surge in the number of COVID-19 cases recorded in the country, with a significant number of those who have tested positive being returnees.

Concern has also been raised over some returnees who skip quarantine without completing the mandatory period, thus putting the lives of communities at risk.

The director for Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Portia Manangazira on Monday said:

We are getting more confirmed cases from returnees … and it’s a cause for concern. We appeal to the returnees to take heed of the public health control measures and stay in quarantine centres for their sake and that of their loved ones.

We appreciate the help we are getting from the security services to ensure that people do not evade quarantine.

Manangazira also conceded that there was overcrowding at some of the quarantine centres, but authorities were working on decongesting them. She said:

The fact that some quarantine centres are overcrowded is a cause for concern, but we are doing all we can to decongest them by decentralising operations to provinces.

We are expecting to receive more returnees from around the globe, but our message is that let us keep ourselves safe by following the public health recommendations.

As of 19 May 2020, Zimbabwe had 46 confirmed cases, including 18 recoveries, 24 active cases and 4 deaths from 14 175 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests.

  1. People are getting the Chinese virus from your quarantine center because they are over crowded due to negligence and failure to plan. Your facilities are a concern for all as if you don’t have it you will have it once there and then when you get it you can’t be treated for it because you have no equipment.
