"We'll Surely Engage The Security Sector," Bulawayo On Defiant Vendors

Bulawayo City Council has said that when push comes to shove, the local government will engage the security sector to make sure vendors are removed from undesignated sites.

This was said by the local authority’s Town Clerk, Mr Christopher Dube while speaking to The Sunday Mail. He said:

What I must emphasise is that this is not something that came out of the blue but it was a Government directive which also complements our long-term aim of transforming Bulawayo into a smart city. We will surely engage the security sector to help us deal with those who would want to go against this directive. Besides this move is meant to benefit both the city and the vendors, as we are bringing them close to their clients.

He speaks when local government authorities across the country have in the recent past embarked on the deotion of ‘illegal’ structures owned by informal traders in adherence to a directive issued by the Ministry of Local Government.

Local authorities have always tried, in vain, to push the “hard to tax” informal traders to designated trading sites.
