NRZ has shed more light on why the electric locomotives disappeared for their railways, The Standard reports. This was revealed by NRZ public relations manager at the time, Fanuel Masikati, who said massive vandalism is the main reason why those trains were suspended:
Between six and eight of the electric automotives have been suspended as a result of vandalism and this means that we have to use locomotives which were meant for other routes to service the Harare-Dabuka route.
We need to address the issue of theft and vandalism before we replace the equipment because once someone is used to vandalism, then they would do the same to the installed wires.
NRZ is still struggling with the issue of vandalism as they said they have already lost infrastructure valued at $130 000 to vandalism since the turn of the new year.
