"Injure One, Injure All," - MDC MPs On Victimisation Of Party Members

Members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) who visited Joannah Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecelia Chimbiri in hospital yesterday said that the trio was traumatised and in great pain.

The legislators said that the victimisation of the three members of the party was tantamount to the victimisation of all party members. We present below a statement that was issued by Shakespear Hamauswa, the party’s legislator for Warren Park following the visit.

At least 8 Harare MPs led by the Provincial Chairman Hon Chikombo, Secretary-General Hwende and VP Biti accompanied the people’s President Advocate Nelson Chamisa on a visit to Park Town Hospital where Harare West Member of Parliament Hon Joana Mamombe and two others at a are recuperating from after being tortured and traumatised by suspected state agents. Solidarity is one of our flagships as MDC Alliance. We say “injure one, injure all”.

The three youthful leaders are in pain and they were traumatised.

The regime has shown us once again what they fear most-popular uprising.

As MDC Alliance MPs for Harare, we condemn such acts of torture which amounts to terrorism.

We call upon the government to ensure safety of its citizens. We are against a situation where citizens will devise their own security systems as if they are in the state of nature where there is no common authority.

A closer analysis of the happenings in our country points to a Hobbesian state of nature where life was brutal, nasty and short. In that system, there was no common security. Individual security was based on own initiatives and personal strength.

In that state, everyone lived in fear of violent death. There were no judges. Everyone was a judge in his own case.
Definitely that was before the modern civilised state.

That Zanu PF has thrown us back to the state of nature, it is now the time to come up with a people’s social contract.

We cannot live in this situation anymore unless we want to destroy ourselves.

A new social contract is needed that will be renewed every five years through a free and fair election.

That social contract should provide security for all.

The social contract should usher into being a new establishment premised on love, rule of law and democratic governance.

We have called upon the government to provide social welfare support for the vulnerable during the lockdown but they are failing to do that.

They only react with brutal force when citizens express their displeasure about continue bad governance.

We cannot have this kind of leadership whose toolkit comprises of weapons of torture, corruption, and brutality.

As MPs we condemn this kind of treatment to Members of Parliament and the general citizens of Zimbabwe.

We know the buck ends with ED and he must act to stop all acts of terror against Zimbabwean citizens.
