Local Govt Minister Dragged To Court Over Vic Falls Mayor

The MDC-Alliance has dragged July Moyo, the Minister of Local Government, following his reinstatement of Victoria Falls Mayor Somvelo Dlamini.

The party had replaced Dlamini with Rich Mguni on Thursday last week on the understanding that he was relinquishing his position effective July 1.

Moyo reinstated Dlamini after reinstated MDC Secretary General, Douglas Mwonzora wrote him a letter instructing the Minister to reinstate him.

MDC Alliance Matabeleland North provincial chairperson and Binga South legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda on Thursday said that the party is seeking the court’s opinion over Moyo’s decision. He said:

We are seeking the opinion of the court on whether the minister’s actions are within the law. The former mayor was reinstated to be councillor and not mayor. Mayorship is acquired through election by councillors. The duly-elected mayor of Victoria Falls Municipality is Rich Mguni.

Meanwhile, Dlamini who has since resumed work told NewsDay that his removal from office was illegal adding that all the confusion was now gone following the minister’s intervention.

The developments are inspired by power dynamics in the MDC. The new party leadership reinstated by the Supreme Court ruling is reportedly reinstalling its allies who had been removed by Nelson Chamisa.
