MDC Alliance Councillors Defy Mwonzora
MDC Alliance councillors in Victoria Falls ignored a directive by reinstated MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora to reinstate the town’s mayor, Somvelo Dlamini, who was fired for defying a party directive.
In 2018, Dlamini contested and won the mayoral elections against an MDC Alliance directive, as the party’s preferred candidate was Margaret Valley.
On 24 February, MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende sacked Dlamini from his position.
Dlamini approached the High Court to challenge his expulsion but later withdrew the lawsuit and voluntarily resigned after Mwonzora assured him that he will be reinstated.
After Parliament allowed Mwonzora to recall four MDC Alliance MPs on Tuesday, Mwonzora advised Local Government minister July Moyo to reinstate Dlamini.

However, MDC Alliance councillors aligned to Chamisa defied the directive and went on to hold elections on Thursday where they elected Richard Mguni to take over as mayor ahead of Patricia Mwale, who is now the deputy mayor.
One of the councillors who spoke to The Standard said:
We think interested parties will understand that a resignation is a unilateral act and everything we did was above board on the basis of that resignation.
We proceeded in terms of section 103 of the Urban Councils Act.
However, politics remains politics and powerful politicians in many instances get their way.
MDC Alliance provincial chairman for Matabeleland North, Prince Dubeko Sibanda said that Dlamini was only reinstated as a councillor, not mayor since mayorship is acquired through elections by councillors.
