Fight For Property Ownership In MDC Turns Nasty

The fight over control of the property in the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has reached another level with reports suggesting that members are threatening each other with unspecified action.

The Standard reports that members aligned to a faction led by Nelson Chamisa recently seized property
at the party’s provincial offices in Marondera after reinstated party Secretary General, Douglas Mwonzora had appointed Wellington Makonese as the Provincial Administrator.

Makonese who alleges that there are plans to evict him from the party offices where he is currently residing says he has since reported the matter to the police. He narrated what transpired:

I have opened a case against them after receiving threats. The following day, they returned to the office, broke in and stole some chairs, computers and printers, among other things, and went away.

They broke the door to the main office, took some property and changed the locks. I have since filed a report at Dombotombo Police Station.

Tensions between the two factions have escalated following the Supreme Court ruling which reinstated Thokozani Khupe as the party’s interim leader and ordered the party to hold an extraordinary congress to choose Morgan Tsvangirai’s successor.
