Zim Ranked Number 3 In Africa In Terms Of Budget Transparency

Zimbabwe has a higher ranking than other African countries in terms of budget transparency according to Open Budget Survey(OBS)’s 2019 report, The Chronicle reports.

According to the publication, Zimbabwe has a transparency score of 49 out of 100, and comes third after South Africa which has a score of 87 and Namibia 51 and according to the publication:

This 7th edition of the OBS covers 117 countries and the survey helps local civil society to assess and deliberate with government on the reporting and use of public funds.

A transparency score of 61 or above indicates a country is likely publishing enough material to support informed public debate on the budget

The OBS measures public access to information on how government raises and spends public resources. It also assesses the online availability, timeliness, and comprehensiveness of eight key budget documents using 109 equally weighted indicators and scores each country on a scale of 0 to 100.

Commenting about the ranking Secretary for Finance and Economic Development Mr George Guvamatanga said this to The Herald:

For us to really to be ranked number three in Africa in terms of budget transparency is quite a significant achievement especially if you look at where we are coming from as a country.

It actually means that our budget processes are very transparent and that the use of public funds is done in a manner where the taxpayers have access to the information. It just shows that our Government structures are working, are improving and they are working effectively.
