Financial Intelligence Unit Launches Investigation Into Bragging 'Money Changer' Video Clip

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has said the Financial Intelligence Unit is investigating a video clip circulating on social media showing a man bragging whilst displaying sealed packs of $5 notes.

The video clip surfaced on social media platforms on Monday, with the man, believed to be a money changer, waving wads of crisp banknotes.

The RBZ statement read:

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has noticed with great concern a video clip circulating on social media showing a man bragging whilst displaying sealed packs of $5 notes. The Bank has referred the matter to the Financial Intelligence Unit for investigation.

Zimbabwe has been in the grip of a debilitating cash crunch which started over four years ago following the government’s decision to introduce a surrogate currency, the bond note.
