Financial Intelligence Unit Launches Investigation Into Bragging ‘Money Changer’ Video Clip

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has said the Financial Intelligence Unit is investigating a video clip circulating on social media showing a man bragging whilst displaying sealed packs of $5 notes.

The video clip surfaced on social media platforms on Monday, with the man, believed to be a money changer, waving wads of crisp banknotes.

The RBZ statement read:

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has noticed with great concern a video clip circulating on social media showing a man bragging whilst displaying sealed packs of $5 notes. The Bank has referred the matter to the Financial Intelligence Unit for investigation.

Zimbabwe has been in the grip of a debilitating cash crunch which started over four years ago following the government’s decision to introduce a surrogate currency, the bond note.

The quasi-currency has, since its introduction in 2016, morphed into the RTGS dollar and finally, the reincarnated Zimbabwe Dollar but has remained scarce with members of the public having to “buy” the currency from illegal money dealers.
