The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) is set to rope in more commuter omnibuses (kombis) to operate under its franchise in a bid to address transport challenges under the Level 2 lockdown.
ZUPCO Acting Chief Executive Officer Everisto Madangwa said that the commuter omnibuses will be required to carry only 8 passengers to maintain social distancing.
This comes after the government banned commuter omnibuses and taxis from operating during the lockdown in a bid to ensure social distancing.
On Friday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced a relaxation of the movement restrictions but only ZUPCO buses were permitted to transport workers to and from home.
ZUPCO buses are too few to provide adequate transport for the commuting public and this has resulted in crowds gathering at bus termini across cities, creating another challenge for social distancing.
On Monday thousands of commuters were left stranded across the country as they could not find transport to travel to work.
