WATCH: The Attorney General Speaks On The Issue Of Deferred Rent Payments
The Attorney-General, Prince Machaya says landlords are prohibited from evicting tenants for as long as the lockdown is in place.
Machaya added that this, however, does not mean that tenants who are able to pay rentals have to stop doing so. He said:
This law prohibits a landlord from evicting a tenant by reason of the tenant failing to pay his rent during the period of lockdown.
FeedbackAs you are aware, the lockdown started on 30 March, and the whole of April, people have been under lockdown. As of now, this lockdown expires on 3 May.
We don’t know what will happen after that but what this law says is that during the period of the lockdown, however long that may take, no person may be evicted from their rented accommodation.
