Zimbabwean Govt Set To Ease Lockdown Measures - REPORT

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to relax the five-week-long national lockdown when it elapses on Sunday, 3 May 2020, a report by The Independent claims.

At its Tuesday meeting, the Cabinet reportedly asked the National Covid-19 Taskforce chaired by Vice-President Kembo Mohadi to come up with a detailed programme on the easing of the lockdown by the end of today (Friday).

The security services allegedly warned President Mnangagwa against extending the stringent lockdown measures further as they could result in civil unrest given the state of the economy and a restive populace.

According to The Independent, government officials revealed that ministers unanimously agreed to significantly ease the lockdown beginning Monday. The publication quotes its source as saying:

Retailers will be allowed to re-open during the course of the coming week while restaurants and bars, which are considered high-risk areas, will remain closed and can only be allowed to open after a week or so under strict health measures. These were proposals given to the taskforce by Cabinet members during the discussions.

It was also proposed that schools and tertiary institutions will stay closed until satisfactory levels of containment were achieved. It was also resolved that all schools and tertiary institutions have to be thoroughly disinfected before they open and this will certainly take a long time.

President Mnangagwa initially announced a 21-day national lockdown which commenced on March 30 and was scheduled to end on April 19.

He, however, extended the stay-at-home order by another two weeks to May 3.
