Vendors operating at Gweru’s Kudzanai bus terminus and Kombayi markets have reportedly complied with the government directive to voluntarily move their wares from the two places to pave way for their renovation.
Gweru mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe said that the vendors will return to upgraded markets with proper ablution facilities. Said Makombe:
There has been a word to the effect that we want to punish vendors. On the contrary, we have our people at heart. What we are doing is creating room to upgrade these markets.
People will not be moved forever as they will come back to better markets with proper ablution facilities. Their movement to the new site is therefore temporary….
Gweru City Council is constructing a new market in Mtapa to house vendors, with those who were operating in the CBD set to be given first priority.
The government recently directed local authorities to take advantage of the lockdown to “restore order” in their areas of jurisdiction.
