"We Pray Your Esteemed Office Proactively Declares Bulawayo’s Woes A National Disaster.” Residents To ED

Bulawayo residents have appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to declare the city a water shortage area.

The same appeal was made to the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement in January by the Bulawayo City Council but no response was given to date.

The Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) cited section 77(a) of the Constitution that implores the State to, by all means necessary, ensure that citizens enjoy the right to water.

The association’s co-ordinator Emmanuel Ndlovu in a letter dated April 27 said:

As BPRA, we wish to humbly appeal for the intervention of your esteemed office in the dire water situation faced by Bulawayo residents.

The water crisis is so critical that if not properly arrested it might culminate in a calamity. It is against this background that as BPRA, we pray that your esteemed office proactively declares the city’s woes a national disaster.

The residents say that they have been without water for five consecutive days as water bodies supplying the city are with limited volumes of water.

Almost all urban local authorities are grappling with the water issue with Harare citing the absence of chemicals to treat the water as one of its major challenges.
