Detectives Put On Self-isolation After Arresting Suspected COVID-19 Patient

Seven police detectives were reportedly put on self-isolation after they came into contact with an accused person suspected of being infected with the coronavirus.

The detectives arrested the accused (37), and his female accomplice (26), on April 11 for theft of a firearm and attempting to sell it.

The accused were denied bail when they appeared at the Harare Magistrates Courts last week, further raising concerns that they could have spread the virus to other suspects and prison guards during a court appearance if indeed they are infected.

An unnamed police officer is quoted by NewsDay as having said:

There is an accused dealt with by Police Homicide Section who is suspected to be COVID-19 positive.

The accused was put in remand prison for a case of theft of a firearm. He was denied bail and his next remand date is May 5.

We don’t know if this accused has been tested at the prison, but the detectives who dealt with them have been self-isolated for now.

The coronavirus has affected 28 people and killed 4 in Zimbabwe, according to official statistics. The country is currently on lockdown which is due to elapse on 3 May.
