"Zimbabweans In The Diaspora Are Part Of Zimbabwe." - Mahere Fumes

Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, a leader in the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has condemned the ill-treatment of Zimbabwean returnees by authorities and some members of the public.

She posted on Twitter reminding that Zimbabweans in the diaspora were also Zimbabweans. Her remarks come after some allegedly said that the returnees who were refusing to be housed at Belvedere Teachers College should go back to where they came from.

The returnees were arguing that the institution has no running water hence inappropriate for quarantine.

It is within this context that Mahere tweeted saying:

Let’s be clear: Zimbabweans in the diaspora are part of Zimbabwe. They have every right to be here. We must not let anyone divide us. The diaspora is our family. They are our friends. If anything, we should be pushing for the diaspora vote not telling them “to go back,”

The returnees decided to come back as coronavirus lockdown regulations in the countries which host them were making their lives unbearable.

Despite reports suggesting that an employer of some of the returnees had offered to pay for their hospital bills if any local hotel had accepted them, the government announced that it had resolved to quarantine them at Belevedere Teachers College.
