MDC Alliance MP for Mutasa South, Regai Tsunga was on Tuesday arrested by police in Palmerstone, Mutare while distributing free maize meal to vulnerable members in the constituency whose plight has been worsened by the 5-week lockdown.
Tsunga, who was taken to Mutare Central Police station where he paid a $500 fine for contravening Statutory Instrument 83 of 2020 which prohibits unnecessary movement during the national lockdown, confirmed his arrest to NewZimbabwe.com. He said;
It’s true that police picked me up at Palmerstone while I was implementing a constituency-based COVID-19 intervention activity centred on food security and nutrition.
Meanwhile, MDC Manicaland province spokesperson, David Panganayi has castigated the police for double standards and vowed that the party will not be cowed by the victimisation.
Panganayi said Manicaland Minister of State Ellen Gwaradzimba was never arrested recently after she distributed rice in Sakubva high density.
Reports indicate that ruling ZANU PF party officials abuse government programmes by seizing goods meant for the poor and giving them away to supporters.
The MP violated the lockdown rules. All he was supposed to do was to get a permit to allow him to move and distribute his staff.
This is not constructive thinking!How big was the team who helped him distribute the food items if he had any.As an MP do you think he would want to put his own life into jeopardy?Fo you think if he gave the food to Zanu,Zanu was not going to distribute breaking the law,let alone stealing it.Zanu is a party from the Kingdom of Darkness.
It’s a pity that people are putting politics above lives. Why politicise a noble did and undermine the efforts of one party. It’s really childish.
