"Returnees From UK Refuse To Be Quarantined At Designated Centres, Demand Hotels," - Mangwana

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana has claimed that citizens who were repatriated from the United Kingdom are refusing to be quarantined at designated quarantine centres.

Mangwana said that the returnees are demanding to be quarantined at local hotels. Posting on Twitter on Monday, Mangwana said:

We received 65 Zimbabweans from the UK. Available place of quarantine is Belvedere Teachers College. They are refusing this accommodation demanding hotels. Govt can’t afford. Why come from a covid19 hotspot during a lockdown & demand posh facilities at stretched public cost?

Other reports suggest that there is no running water at Belvedere College returnees are vowing to sleep outside the facility although government officials said they would be transferred to the University of Zimbabwe tomorrow.

This comes amid reports that Zimbabwe’s quarantine centres are substandard. Recently, a government official said that the country was not equipped to accommodate Zimbabweans returning from South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post.

Resultantly, the “bankrupt” government may not afford to book rooms at local hotels for returnees. Moreover, hotels and guest houses may not agree to have returnees quarantined at their institutions as that can spread the deadly coronavirus.
