"We're Fully Aware Of The Huge Costs Of The Lockdown," ED Speaks On Lockdown Extension

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that he chose the safety of the citizenry over the benefits associated with lifting the coronavirus lockdown.

He made the remarks at the State House in Harare this Sunday where he extended the lockdown that was due to expire tonight by two more weeks. Extending the lockdown, Mnangagwa said:

We are fully aware of the huge costs of the lockdown: To our economy, to people’s livelihoods, to families and to the joyful lives of our children. But we have chosen the path of responsibility, the path of caution. Nothing is more important than saving lives.

With our country not yet meeting the WHO conditions to lift the lockdown, we have therefore extended the lockdown by 14 days, until 3rd May. This is not an easy decision, but it is both necessary and unavoidable.

Zimbabwe has so far officially recorded 25 coronavirus cases including three deaths, numbers which some say could have been higher if authorities had a more vigorous screening, testing, quarantine and contact tracking strategy.
