"We Were The Malaysia Of That Time," - Chamisa Sees A Glorious Zimbabwe

Nelson Chamisa, a leader in the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has said that Zimbabwe has continued to deteriorate under the ruling ZANU PF.

He claims that at independence, Zimbabwe was prosperous and was envied by many countries. Chamisa made the remarks in his independence address to mark Zimbabwe’s 40th independence. He said:

Our education was exemplary and I am a good example of that good education system, which recorded the highest literacy rate.

Our health services were excellent [at Independence]. We didn’t have to go to China, Singapore or Malaysia for treatment. We were the Malaysia of that time and we need to go back to those glory days so that we can move away from these sorrowful days that we are currently having.

His remarks come when the Asian giants have become a place of refuge for Zimbabwean political elites seeking medical attention as the local health system is collapsed. This is hard to imagine particularly when the whole world is struggling to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

The country’s education sector collapsed around 2008 during the hyperinflation which forced learned educators to leave the country.

Chamisa believes that Zimbabwe can still recover the glory it had at independence.
