A legal battle for the control of one of the country’s oldest clubs, Zimbabwe Saints Football Club is looming after one of the factions that claim to be in charge of the club accused a heavyweight politician of attempting a takeover.
Columbus Makumbe, who claims to be the bona fide board chairman of the club said he was unaware of reports that the club had affiliated with the Zifa Southern Region Division One league to participate in this year’s edition.
This comes after Vincent Pamire, who claims to be the board chairman, said Zimbabwe Saints will participate in the 2020 football season.
Makumbe, his deputy Ebson Muguyo and club secretary Martin Mabvira said they will take action if the rumoured politician attempted to take over the club. Said Makumbe:
I understand there is a political heavyweight who has poured in money, but that would be illegal. It will go back to the courts if it is done behind our back. We are playing watch-and-see-game. If we are not properly invited and informed we are going back to court.
“Chauya Chikwata”, as the club was popularly known, won the league title in 1988 and produced great players like the Mckop brothers Henry and Pernell, Gibson Homela, Ephraim Chawanda, Joseph Machingura, John Sibanda and Jimmy Phiri.
Agent Sawu, Ronald “Gidiza” Sibanda, Muzondiwa Mugadza and Melusi Nkiwane are also some of the illustrious players who once donned the club’s jersey.
