7 385 People Arrested For Disregarding Lockdown Measures

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a total 7 385 people countrywide since March 30, for violating lockdown restrictions.

In a statement on Thursday, ZRP said the people were arrested for contravening various Statutory Instruments promulgated by the government to give effect to the stay-at-home order and violating the Miscellaneous Offences Act. The statement read:

The ZRP confirms that since the onset of the national lock-down which commenced on 30/3/20, a total of 7 385 people have been arrested for violating national lockdown measures through contravening section 4 (1) (c) of SI 83/20, section 4 (1) (a) of SI 83/20, section 5 (1) of SI 83/20 and the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

We urge members of the public to continue taking heed of Government lockdown measures to enable security services to maintain law and order effectively.

The lockdown measures, announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on 27 March 2020, are meant to reduce the spread of COVID-19, a deadly respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Parirenyatwa Hospital, the country’s largest public health facility, has commenced COVID-19 rapid testing, starting with front line staff, with the test programme expected to be extended to patients.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the test procedure only takes about 15 minutes.
