Deputy Chitungwiza mayor and Ward 19 councillor Musa Makweza said more than 5 000 people in the ward are in need of urgent food aid following the imposition of the 21-day lockdown.
Makweza revealed that 4 500 people have already been shortlisted and expect more people to come forward. He said:
As of yesterday (Saturday) 4 500 people were shortlisted. From my assessment over 5 000 need aid in the form of either funds to lessen hunger during the lockdown. There is no food in the ward. If not mistaken, the ward has 9 000 families, so we believe more vulnerable people will come forward.
Makweza further revealed that the acting town clerk directed councillors to write names of the vulnerable people who will receive aid from the government.
Those identified as vulnerable include orphans, people living with disability and the elderly, Makweza said.
The Chitungwiza deputy mayor, however, bemoaned the government’s failure to carry out the exercise before announcing the lockdown as people were forced indoors with no food to eat.
