"High Court Orders Police, Army Officers To Respect Human Rights, Dignity..." - ZLHR

The High Court of Zimbabwe has this Tuesday ordered Zimbabwe Republic Police, the army and other law enforcement officers to respect human rights, dignity and fundamental freedoms.

The determination was on a case in which Lucia Masvondo and the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights challenged brutality on Masvondo.

Posting on Twitter, ZLHR said:

High Court has just granted an interim order that @PoliceZimbabwe, army & other enforcement officers must respect human rights, dignity & fundamental freedoms, in Masvondo & @ZLHRLawyers case.

The case challenges torture, inhuman & degrading conduct, disrespect of dignity & violation of Const by @PoliceZimbabwe & army who invaded Masvondo’s home, assaulted her & set dogs on her. It also challenges none compliance with social distancing by ZRP & others.

The order is granted when there are reports suggesting that officers enforcing the 21-day national lockdown were harassing members of the public for allegedly defying the lockdown regulations.
Last week, a Harare man was left with a fractured hand after police assaulted him when they met him on his way to the shops to get change for his client.
