Zimbabwe Police Arrest More Than 500 People For Defying Lockdown Regulations

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has reported that it has arrested more than 500 people for defying the national lockdown that was imposed to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

The arrests were confirmed by police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who told the Herald that the offenders violated varying lockdown regulations. Nyathi said:

The number of people arrested to date has risen to 5 226. These were arrested for various offences, including operating shebeens, traffic-related offences, operating businesses without exemptions, while those caught moving aimlessly make the highest number of culprits.

He urged members of the public to adhere to the regulations adding that the lockdown was a government measure premised at protecting everyone’s life.

Meanwhile, there are some who are calling for the relaxation of measures which they say are causing untold suffering to the citizenry who now have limited access to essentials including food as movement and business are prohibited.

They say the lockdown added pain on a nation that already had an economic and humanitarian crisis. The World Health Organisation (WHO) however warned against the lifting of the restrictions saying this will exacerbate the coronavirus pandemic situation.
