"We Expect The Water Situation To Return To Near Normal Soon," Kariba Mayor

Kariba Mayor Mr George Masendu has said that the water challenges bedevilling the local authority will soon be over following a steady increase in water inflows into Lake Kariba.

The Herald reports that as a result of recently increased inflows into Kariba, the first penstock is now completely in the water while prospects are that the second one will soon be underwater.

The publication further reports that the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) indicated that as of last Friday, the lake’s level had increased to 18,82 percent of maximum usable water for power generation. Commenting on the development, Kariba mayor, Mr George Masendu said:

We expect that the situation to return to near normal in the coming days as we work on bringing the pontoon mounted pump closer to the Breezes intake tower.

At the moment, the local authority is providing water on a rotational basis and residents in the affected areas have been struggling to get water in recent days raising fears of a disease outbreak.

Increased water levels in the lake also give hope on the power situation in the country since the reduced power generation was being attributed to shrinking water levels.
