Holding Elections In A Coronavirus Pandemic Environment: The Case Of South Korea

South Korea is holding its legislative election next week. This sounds a bit inappropriate considering that the whole world is grappling against the coronavirus pandemic that has seen thousands of people dying since its emergence in China last year.

Many events and activities which required human gatherings are still suspended, yet, the Asian country that has been commended for its strategy in fighting the virus is scheduled to hold elections.

In the VOA News video below, the country is cleaning streets and disinfecting public services. Coronavirus patients will be voting by mail.

Meanwhile, despite the expectation of a low voter turnout due to lockdown restrictions in other jurisdictions where some Korean citizens reside, the country never seriously considered postponing the election.
