Govt Directs All Councils To Handover Clinics With Immediate Effect

The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, has directed all local government authorities (councils) to handover health institutions under their jurisdiction to the Ministry of Health and Child Care for the purposes of fighting Covid-19.

In a letter addressed to all mayors, town council and chairpersons of rural local authorities, the minister said that the decision was in consideration of the intensity and magnitude of the coronavirus pandemic. He said:

Given the magnitude and intensity posed by Covid-19 pandemic on public health and the economy at large, I am invoking Section 23 of the Civil Protection Act Chapter 10:06 of 1989 to empower all Provincial Development Coordinators to requisition all designated health facilities within their areas of jurisdiction for immediate use by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

Minister Moyo said the exercise should be done immediately. Zimbabwe has recorded 11 coronavirus cases including 3 deaths amid reports that some cases are being concealed by authorities.

Observers say that Zimbabwe is unprepared to combat the virus that emerged in China in December last year. The renovation of Wilkins Hospital, the major institution designated for infectious diseases in the country was completed a few days ago.
