"Zimbabweans Showing Symptoms Of COVID-19 Will Be Immediately Referred To Rapid Response For Testing," - Herald

The Herald, a state-owned publication has reported that Zimbabweans showing symptoms of a potential COVID-19 infection will now be immediately referred to the rapid response team for testing.

The publication, however, does not specify who said the remarks. The alleged development follows the country’s second COVID-19 death in Bulawayo where testing was delayed by his private practitioner until the patient was close to death.

This sparked public outrage with some asking why the results for coronavirus tests came after the patient had already died adding that he could have transmitted the virus to others unknowingly.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care says that only 11 people tested positive for the coronavirus but some believe that the number will increase significantly more tests are conducted.

Neighbouring South Africa has since started implementing a testing model related to that of South Korea which saw health officers moving door to door to conduct tests.

South Africa already has tested more people than Zimbabwe and over a thousand people have tested positive for coronavirus but Health Minister Mkhize believes the number is still too insignificant given that country’s total population and also observing that millions of people have pre-existing conditions including HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis.
