Obert Gutu Says Khupe's Party Sabotaged Chamisa In 2018, Will Do It Again In 2023

Former vice president of the MDC-T faction formerly led by Thokozani Khupe, Obert Gutu has revealed that his party’s plan in the 2018 harmonised elections was to stop Nelson Chamisa from becoming the President of Zimbabwe.

Speaking during an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, Gutu, who referred to Chamisa as “a young dictator”, vowed to sabotage Chamisa’s presidential bid in 2023.

Chamisa and Khupe fell out soon after the death of founding MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai on Valentine’s Day in 2018.

Khupe, who had been boycotting MDC-T meetings for almost a year before Tsvangirai’s death, left the opposition party after the National Council appointed Chamisa to be the presidential candidate in the harmonised elections held later that year.

Gutu also left the Chamisa camp after his bid to contest for the Harare East National Assembly seat was thwarted by Tendai Biti whose party, PDP, had made a pact with Tsvangirai and Chamisa under the MDC Alliance.

According to NewsDay senior reporter Blessed Mhlanga, Gutu’s latest remarks shows that Khupe’s party does not want State power or to serve the people but to stop Chamisa from becoming the president of Zimbabwe. Said Mhlanga:

Gutu just spilt the beans – they don’t want state power or to serve the people noooo. They just want to stop @nelsonchamisa. The truth is only @nelsonchamisa and @edmnangagwa have a plan of getting into power.
