ZANU PF At It Again... Hijacks Subsidised Mealie-meal Facility

The ruling ZANU PF party has been accused of hijacking a government subsided mealie-meal facility to benefit its members and supporters in Bulawayo, having done the same in Chiredzi recently.

Bulawayo residents who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com claimed that the subsided maize meal facility has been politicised by the ruling party. One of the residents said:

Zanu PF ward officers were screening people who wanted to buy mealie-meal at People’s Market shop in Tshabalala.

One of the officials (name supplied) was asking people who were in the queue to produce Zanu PF cards before they could be allowed to buy the mealie-meal.

What they are doing is very unfair because the mealie-meal is subsidised through the taxpayer’s money.

Another resident said that Zanu PF ward and district officials identify shops which are run by Zanu PF people and the list was then submitted to Bulawayo Metropolitan Provincial Affairs Minister Judith for approval.

At the end of the day, only shops owned by people linked to the ruling party receive mealie meal from millers who would have bought maize from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) at a government subsidised price of $242 per tonne.

This comes after reports from Chiredzi revealed that ZANU PF officials in the district were distributing mealie meal to their members under cover of darkness.
