PSL Caught Offside In Herentals Match Fixing Saga

Herentals Football Club could still regain its topflight status after it emerged that the Premier Soccer League has no locus standi over teams playing under its auspices, as they are all members of Zifa according to Article 10 of the Zifa constitution.

The PSL barred Herentials from participating in the topflight football league following accusations of match-fixing, a charge the club has denied.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) cleared Herentals of the allegations for lack of evidence, but the PSL again threw out the club for taking football matters to court.

It has now emerged that ZIFA is still using the constitution that was adopted in 2013, rather than the 2019 resolutions by its Assembly, which have not yet been received by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).

Under the 2019 ZIFA resolutions, the PSL was set to become the 24th member of the national association.

As it stands, the Premiership is not a member of ZIFA, therefore, it cannot punish Herentals FC, a club recognised by ZIFA. A football analyst who spoke to the Chronicle said:

Unless the amended 2019 Zifa constitution is ratified by the SRC, the PSL has no legal authority over teams. All disciplinary cases ought to be the baby of Zifa and any club with suspended sanctions imposed by the PSL must approach Zifa for redress.
