Mwonzora, Komichi Now 'In Charge' Of MDC-T

MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora and party chairman Morgen Komichi have taken charge of congress preparations for the Thokozani Khupe-led party after the duo fell out of favour with the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa.

Mwonzora told The Standard that his office and that of Komichi are key in running the affairs of the MDC-T. The two abandoned Chamisa after the Supreme Court ruled that Khupe is legally the acting party president pending a congress. He said:

Basically, very much being that these are the key offices [secretary-general and chairman] that run the organisation, yes the acting president will be there

What we want to do is to make sure that the voters’ roll is verified.

We need to check the physical existence of those people and that will entail an exercise where our people move around and check the physical existence of those people.

Mwonzora said any MDC official who is fully subscribed and who meets the constitutional requirements is eligible to stand for the post of president.

He, however, ruled out his predecessors Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube who are now deputy presidents of the MDC Alliance.
