Police "Lay Siege" Of MDC Headquarters

Zimbabwe Republic Police reportedly laid siege of Morgan Tsvangirai House, Formerly known as Harvest House, which is the Headquarters of the opposition MDC.

NewsDay reports that police officers denied members of the MDC from both the faction led by Dr Thokozani Khupe and the other led by advocate Nelson Chamisa.

The report comes amid allegations that the two MDC formations are fighting over control of the building following the Supreme Court ruling on the party’s leadership crisis.

The development was confirmed by national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who told NewsDay that the police were merely maintaining law and order. He said:

Police officers are maintaining law and order in terms of the constitutional mandate that they have in terms of ensuring peace and security, particularly now that the nation is implementing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Nyathi refuted reports which say people were being turned away. NewsDay Weekender, however, claims that on Friday morning, a police truck was parked at the entrance of the party headquarters, with armed police officers milling around and forcing people to the ground near the premises.

Biti was also blocked from holding a press conference at the premises.
