"Farmers & Traders Must Continue To Deliver Produce To Markets," - ED Directs Security Forces

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ordered police not to disturb farmers and traders of agricultural products. This comes after Mutare police raided farmers at ungodly hours and confiscated their goods for defying the national lockdown decree.

The lockdown which became effective on the 30th of March was imposed on the country to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The president while announcing the lockdown said that essential services including food and health were not prohibited but there was no discrimination when the police and the army enforced the decree. Speaking after police banned farmers from selling Mnangagwa said:

Farmers and traders alike must equally continue to deliver produce to markets including to those markets that supply our cities, towns and growth points.

To that end, I direct our security arms to ensure a pathway for food supply. All agricultural activity must remain undisturbed throughout the period of the lockdown. All our producers must continue to feed the nation with minimum hassles.

Zimbabwe already has an acute economic and humanitarian crisis characterised by a shortage of mealie-meal and inflation.

Limiting access to food was worsening the situation and some had already started defying the lockdown as they tried to get food.
