"Wilkins Hospital Nurses Resign," - REPORT

Nurses at Wilkins Hospital, a Harare institution designated for infectious diseases are reportedly resigning citing poor remuneration amid reports that there is potential exposure to coronavirus as they do not have adequate protective clothing.

The institution already had inadequate health caregivers forcing them to work overtime with minimal resources. Zimbabwe Independent reports that four nurses last week resigned from the facility amid reports saying three more intend to leave this week. A source at the hospital said:

People have been really trying, but after working so much we are getting peanuts…. The staff here have not been getting any allowances and have been working with limited protective clothing. Some people decided that it is better to leave and go where they are paying in US dollars. Four nurses left and only 16 remain, but three more will be going soon.

Zimbabwe Nurses Association secretary-general Enock Dongo called upon the government to provide personal protective equipment adding that health caregivers are potentially exposed to coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Health director in the City of Harare Dr Prosper Chonzi said that the local authority was waiting for health personnel to be seconded to Wilkins and Beatrice from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, for an effective coronavirus response.
