Fearful Of Hunger & COVID-19, Thousands Of Zimbabweans Flee To Villages

Thousands of Zimbabweans fled to their rural homes over the weekend unsure of what they will eat during the 21-day national lockdown announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday.

Major bus termini in the major cities, Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Masvingo were inundated by thousands of travellers who were rushing to beat the Monday midnight deadline.

A traveller, Joseph Mhembere told NewsDay that he was not sure if the company that he works for would pay him his March salary. He said:

My company has closed and I am not sure if we are going to receive this month’s salary. I decided to move to my rural home in Gokwe so that my children won’t suffer from hunger. I cannot survive this lockdown period without any financial help.

Another traveller, Chenai Moyo of Mbare hostels who was on her way to Chiredzi said the need to maintain social distancing had forced her to temporarily migrate to her roots. She said:

Latest Tecno Pop 8 - now available in Pindula.

$94, Cash on Delivery in Harare & Bulawayo.

WhatsApp: 0783 450 793

It is not that easy to migrate to Chiredzi. I live in a one-roomed house with my three children and to keep social distance might not be easy, hence I am opting for my village.
