Zimbabwe Diaspora Launches COVID-19 GoFundMe Fundraiser

A group of Zimbabweans in the diaspora has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help raise funds for the COVID-19 response in Zimbabwe.

The group is led by prominent activist, Freeman Chari, who is known to have successfully led the fundraising of other Zim social causes in the past.

Said Chari as part of the announcement of the campaign:

The healthcare situation in Zimbabwe has been dire since 2019 and this pandemic is adding unprecedented strain on an already ailing system.

This fundraiser will be to support the well-being of Frontline Healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses and allied workers. We believe they need protective gear. We want their food needs while at work taken care of so they don’t have to leave the hospitals which could increase chances of transmission. Funds permitting we will also work with authorities to support extended stay with minimal commute to their homes so we reduce the risk of transmission. This would also involve supporting the families with food if need be.

We will also work on other Citizen Initiatives aimed at helping the communities cope with the scourge including assisting the elderly with food so they shelter at home.

Some of the initiatives will depend on how much resources we raise.

The fundraising campaign has raised $3,400 so far.

It can be accessed on the following link: gofundme.com/f/covid-zimbabwe.

It is the first citizens led fundraising initiative in response to the possible Coronavirus outbreak in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s first confirmed cases were registered on 20 March 2020, and the first fatal case, earlier this week.

Following Cyclone Idai in March 2019, Chari successfully launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised US $105,000.

This COVID-19 fundraising is being done through a non-profit organisation, Citizens Initiatives, set up by the group to raise funds and coordinating the implementation of projects that use the funds in Zimbabwe.
