On Friday evening, Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care announced that a 38-year-old Caucasian male had tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus after he returned to Victoria Fall from a visit to the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, reports on Saturday morning indicate that two more cases of COVID-19 had been recorded in Zimbabwe (in Harare this time).
While Ministry of Health officials are yet to confirm the latest development, prominent journalist Brezhnev Malaba said the latest cases also involve males. He posted on Twitter:
Sources say the 2 cases in Harare are as follows:
1. A man who recently travelled from the US (a non-Zimbabwean of Asian origin).
2. The son of a prominent Zimbo (for ethical reasons, I can’t reveal names).
But a clear pattern has emerged: immigration controls need a rethink.
The Government of Zimbabwe banned mass gatherings for the next 60 days but opted against placing restrictions on international travel.
Critics have considered this to be a huge error of judgement as COVID-19 has primarily been transmitted across borders.
