A Malawi national who crossed into Zimbabwe from South Africa on Wednesday is being isolated at Beitbridge hospital after showing symptoms of coronavirus.
According to health officials in the Zimbabwean border town, the suspect is stable and tests are underway.
District Medical Officer for Beitbridge, Dr Linos Samhere on Thursday morning told reporters that blood samples will today be sent to Harare for tests to verify whether the suspect is infected with the virus. He added that results are expected in the next 24 hours. Samhere said:
Yes the patient is stable and this morning we are sending blood samples to Harare for tests and once that is done we will be able to tell the nation the outcome.
While Zimbabwe is yet to officially confirm its first coronavirus case, its neighbour and major trading partner, South Africa, had recorded 116 cases as of Wednesday.
