'Govt In Catch-22 Over ZUPCO Buses & COVID-19'

Urban commuters are worried that the government may take Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) buses off the road after President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday banned gatherings of 100 and more people to curb the spread of COVID-19 (the country has no confirmed case).

The buses, which are cheap and were introduced as a measure to alleviate transport woes in the country, usually carry more than 100 passengers both seated and standing on one trip.

An unidentified individual who spoke to Open Parly opined that the government is in a catch 22 situation. He said:

It is a difficult situation because there are two serious situations coronavirus and transport which all deserve attention and government can only tackle one at a time.

Banning public gatherings was a long-overdue move and it was a matter of when and not if, but again there is the issue of overloaded ZUPCO buses some of them carry over 120 passengers.

Government is in a difficult situation, they cannot ban the ZUPCO because they are playing an important role in the economy by providing affordable transport but at the same time, it has to solve the coronavirus issue by imposing these bans.

Zimbabwe is at high risk of being affected by the novel coronavirus after its biggest trading partner and neighbour, South Africa, recorded more than 10 cases.

The country has also been receiving visitors from countries that have recorded high numbers of infections, such as China.
