"Mnangagwa’s Preferred Choice Of Violence Metaphors Is Not Surprising." - Magaisa

Alex Tawanda Magaisa, a former advisor to former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s preferred choice of metaphors is not surprising.

He said that the diction or choice of words is carefully done to inculcate fear in the listener. Magaisa speaks after president Mnangagwa has recently delivered some “controversial” speeches which some say are jokes while his opponents say if they were jokes, they were sick ones.

Magaisa says Mnangagwa’s speech on cockroaches and mortuaries is consistent with other speeches he delivered before.

He adds that the president once referred to dissidents as cockroaches which needed to be flushed out and that resulted in a genocide locally known as Gukurahundi. Magaisa added:

He shows a fondness for metaphors that convey dominance, violence, destruction, death, pain and extermination. He used these metaphors as a young man during Gukurahundi in the 1980s and, without flinching, continues to use them now in old age.

Magaisa who is also a law lecturer in the United Kingdom suggests that those who have been following Mnangagwa know that there are political connotations in his “so-called” jokes are now afraid.

He concludes that the speeches reveal Mnangagwa’s character.
