Govt Begins Land Repossession Exercise To Compensate Commercial Farmers, Commercials Farmers Can Now Apply To Get Their Land Back - Report

The government has started the land repossession exercise that will see commercial and indigenous farmers getting back land as compensation for losing land in the infamous early 2000s land reform program, Newsday reports.

According to Statutory Instrument (SI) 62 of 2020: White Commercial farmers can either get monetary compensation or apply to have their land back:

Any person listed in section 4, who wishes to obtain title to a piece of acquired agricultural land that was formerly his or her farm, may apply in writing to the minister, who shall refer all such applications to the committee.

(2) The minister shall constitute a committee which shall receive and process applications from persons referred to in section 4, with a view to recommending to the minister, whether or not to alienate the land in question to the applicant.

Last year the government disbursed the first batch of compensation to commercial farmers which saw farmers getting ZWL$55 000 each.
